Long lines and marvelous costumes at Disney's D23 Expo 2017...

I have a confession to make, I'm not a fan of huge crowds and I'm not that keen on expos and conventions (I think because I used to man stands at busy exhibition events in soul-destroying indoor convention centres when I used to work in the magazine industry). I'm also not one who likes to wait for hours in queues and it's probably why I've never quite made it to San Diego Comic-Con either.

Disney D23 Expo 2017
However, this past Friday I did make it to Disney's latest D23 Expo in Anaheim, California for the third time to see what surprises the entertainment giant has coming our way in the next few months and years.
Cinderella's carriage

We arrived mid-morning to find that some people had been waiting to get in for over two hours in the sun and heat, which would have killed me. Fortunately we didn't wait that long to get inside.

Regular visitors to this blog will know that I love seeing original costumes and props up close, and the D23 Expo never disappoints in that (wardrobe) department.

Amazing fairytale gowns on display from the Walt Disney Archives
Fantastical Fashions costume exhibit D23 Expo
This time around they were showcasing stunning gowns and costumes from live-action films like Enchanted, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent and 102 Dalmatians.
Fantastical Fashions costume exhibit D23 Expo 2017
I'd seen most of these glamorous outfits on display at previous exhibits, but I always love seeing costumes out of reflective display case, and why keep these works of art locked up in some vault gathering dust when you can show off some cinematic history.

Thor: Ragnarok movie costume exhibit

In addition to movie classics, there were also plenty of costumes from forthcoming films, like Marvel Studios Thor: Ragnarok (out in November) and Black Panther (released next February 2018).

Black Panther movie costume exhibit

I'm a huge Marvel Comics fan, so it's always a thrill to see original costumes and props for my favourite characters brought to life, but the Marvel booth was always so crowded that it proved hard to get to see them without bumping into people.

If you are also a fan, be sure to check out all these cosmic Thor: Ragnarok movie costumes and these supercool African tribal-influenced Black Panther movie costumes on display.

Star Wars costumes, models and props on display
Star Wars Stormtrooper helmet props D23 Expo
There was also a huge pirates retrospective exhibit featuring costumes, props and memorabilia from films, TV and Disney Parks, but as I'm not a fan of pirates (or cowboys for that matter), I didn't want to waste hours waiting for something that I don't enjoy that much (and I've seen my share of Pirates of the Caribbean costumes and props).
Star Wars First Order Leiutenant uniform D23 Expo
I did meander into the Star Wars exhibit, which was showing off Disney's plans to integrate the outer space franchise into their theme parks.
Star Wars Millennium Falcon model D23
There were some cool costumes, props and models display, but I couldn't tell whether they were screen-used originals, or if they had been specially made replicas for use in the parks. they were still pretty cool to see nonetheless.
Star Wars musical instrument props D23
Again there were huge lines to get into this exhibit, unless you just wanted to look at the items on display and then you could just wander in.
Star Wars Ithorian hammerhead D23 Expo
In fact there seemed to be a line for everything - to get in, to buy a cup of coffee or food, to get a ticket for an event later in the day (which you'd also with in line for), lining up for a free poster or an autograph, to me that's my own personal hell and I'd rather spend my time doing something else.

Regardless of my own foibles, people seemed to be enjoying themselves and it was like a Disney, Marvel and Star Wars feeding frenzy for limited-edition products, with people buying bags and bags of merchandise.

I know some people think I didn't really experience the expo properly (and the exciting news seemed to be coming thick and fast throughout the weekend), but I got what I came for, glimpses of fabulous new and classic costumes, and that made me happy.

Maybe one day I'll stick around and wait a while, but I wouldn't count on it...

Escaping the heatwave with an early morning jaunt to Hendry's Dog Beach in Santa Barbara...

With temperatures soaring, power plant explosions and wild fires raging in Southern California this weekend it was time to hit the beach to cool off.

Labrador Cooper Hendrys Beach Santa Barbara
Obviously we were not going to be the only people with this cunning plan, so to avoid nightmare traffic on the road we set off from West Hollywood to Hendry's Beach in Santa Barbara at 7:30am this morning.
Misty summer morning Arroyo Burro Beach
A Sunday lie in would have been nice, but as Cooper's first walk was around 5am and the air was already stiflingly warm getting an early start wasn't a problem.
Misty summer morning Hendry's Beach
After our trip to the U.K. and his stay in doggie daycare for around ten days it's taken some time for him to recover from all the excitement, playing with his canine pals and being away from his creature comforts (like sleeping between us in our bed each night).
Labrador chasing balls Hendrys Beach
Our nine-year-old boy always comes back a little stiff these days, especially as he's getting older and has a little arthritis in his joints, plus he's really not a fan of the hot weather.

That's why I knew it was time for the two hour drive to one of his favorite off-leash dog beaches, also known as Arroyo Burro Beach, to cool him off, letting him paddle along the shoreline, get dunked by the waves and dig and roll around in the sand which he loves to do.
Labrador Cooper Hendrys Beach dog showers
As you can see he also had time to make a big impression on the dog beach and leave his mark temporarily. Fortunately the dog showers were on hand to rinse out all that salt and sand.

It's a long way to go for a hour's fun, and it's a shame that L.A. County doesn't have any comparable off-leash dog beaches, but the day out, including the drive back through Montecito, Ojai and the California countryside reminds us the wonderful life we have at our fingertips and is a welcome escape from world news and politics for a day...

Fabulous costume delights to be seen around L.A. from the small and big screen...

With it being Emmy consideration and blockbuster movie season in L.A., there's lots of TV and film costumes to see at the moment.

Emmy consideration display for RuPaul's Drag Race
season 9 judging gowns
RuPauls Drag Race season 9 judging gowns exhibit
I loved the ninth season of RuPaul's Drag Race, especially its winner, so it was great to see these gowns worn by Mama Ru herself during the judging portion of the show on display in the windows of LASC clothing store in West Hollywood.

Be sure to take a look at RuPaul's judging gowns from season nine in more detail at my costumes and props blog.

Plus if you're also a fan of the reality drag competition, you can also check out these other RuPaul's Drag Race judging gowns from last year too.

A big popcorn blockbuster coming to the big screen this summer is another rebooted Planet of the Apes sequel.

As the ape characters are created with CGI, these human army costumes worn by Woody Harrelson and Mercedes de la Zerda were exhibited in the cinema foyer from War for the Planet of the Apes.

Let's hope the cool costume exhibits keep coming over the summer...

An onslaught of Emmy consideration billboards filling L.A.'s June 2017 skyline...

OMG my brain almost exploded with the volume of Emmy consideration billboards filling L.A.'s sprawling skyline this June. I love this time of year from about mid-May through June as studios, networks, channels and streaming platforms all compete to be seen and garner votes for Emmy Award nominations for the past twelve months television shows which aired from June 1, 2016 to May 31, 2017. Over the years I've lived in L.A. I've become more attuned to the out-of-home campaigning and have also become obsessed with capturing as many examples of the billboards as I can.

Emmy consideration billboards
Legion season 1 Emmy FYC billboard
First up is this psychedelic offering for FX's Legion X-Men universe TV series, which adapts the show's series launch billboard for its Emmy campaign.

Leftovers season 3 Emmy FYC Masterpiece billboard
HBO always has a huge presence in the city skyline for its quality programming of original series, comedy specials and telefilms, although this year the campaigns seemed to kick off later and seemed rushed at times, with billboards rotating ad locations at some speed.

The premium cable channel mostly used amended season key art for the shows billboards with evocative quotes taken from media sources, like with this 'Masterpiece' example for the third and final season of The Leftovers.
The Night Of Mesmerizing Emmy FYC billboard

Plus HBO's Girls came to an end with its sixth season this year, so can the drama take home an Emmy for the 'Groundbreaking' series?

If you like these examples, make sure you also check out more of HBO's cohesive 2017 Emmy consideration billboard campaign from this May and June.
Stranger Things For your consideration neon Emmy billboard
Streaming platform Netflix may not have had a cohesive outdoor ad campaign for its many shows and specials, but what it lacked in uniformity, it certainly made up for in spectacle.

In addition to standard billboards for its 80s sci-fi horror homage, Stranger Things, it also had this fantastic neon sign installation along the busy Sunset Strip above the infamous Whisky A Go-Go club  to capture TV Academy voters imaginations.
The OA season 1 Emmy FYC billboard
Speaking of science fiction, I also glimpsed this Emmy FYC billboard for Netflix's The OA series featuring Brit Marling.
Black Mirror season 3 Emmy billboard
The third season of British anthology series Black Mirror, which explores the dark side of technology in our lives, cleverly also wanted passersby to be aware they'd know if they considered the show or not.

Underground season 2 Emmy FYC billboard
WGN America announced that it was canceling its scripted drama Underground just after I spotted these FYC billboards for the show's sophomore season, so let's see if that affects its Emmy nomination chances.
Pierce Brosnan The Son Emmy FYC billboard
Another U.S. historical drama hoping to garner some Emmy nominations this season was AMC's The Son starring Pierce Brosnan.
Leah Remini Scientology Aftermath Emmy billboard
A&E was shining a spotlight on Leah Remini and her Scientology and the Aftermath documentary series in which she exposed the dark secrets and hypocrisy of the celebrity religious cult.

And TBS was hopeful that the inaugural season of its comedy Search Party would garner some Emmy nominations with the help of this quote-filled ad creative.
FYC Full Frontal Samantha Bee 2017 Emmy billboard
Samantha Bee has been doing a stellar job on her late-night satirical talk show Full Frontal this past year covering the U.S. presidential election and our new Idiot-in-Chief, so it's no wonder TBS has filled the skies with Emmy consideration billboards for the clever, funny lady.
Trevor Noah 2017 Emmy FYC billboard
Trevor Noah is also another late-night observer who's also been questioning and laughing at the current administration on The Daily Show, so he was also looking for your Emmy consideration.

And NBC's new tearjerking time-spanning drama This Is Us was also highlighting its generational cast of characters this month.

American Gods season 1 Emmy FYC billboards
Premium cable channel Starz had a duo of billboards along West Hollywood's heavily trafficked Sunset Strip for its new critically-acclaimed adaptation of Neil Gaiman's American Gods.
Portlandia woman is trophy to you billboard
Plus I also spied this quirky and politically timely billboard for the seventh season of the sketch show Portlandia, which I believe is meant to be a fun Emmy consideration ad.
Gigi Gorgeous This is Everything Emmy billboard
And finally, even online channel YouTube Red was jumping on the Emmy awards bandwagon for its documentary about transgender web star Gigi Gorgeous, This is Everything.

As you can see, there's been a lot of money spent on outdoor advertising for Emmy campaigning  recently.

Make sure you also check out all the Emmy consideration billboards that graced L.A.'s skies in June 2016 and take a look at my Daily Billboard Blog for even more 2017 Emmy consideration billboards.

And let's wait and see which of these outdoor ads pay off when the nominations are announced on July 13, 2017...
